First words

First Words Flashcards for Toddlers

Use clear pictures of familiar people, objects, and actions to make first-word practice part of ordinary play. Print the cards or let your phone quietly guide you through a short activity while your toddler looks, points, and moves.

Follow your toddler’s attention

Name the picture, pause, and notice what your child does next. A point, look, sound, or attempt to bring the matching object can all keep the interaction moving without turning it into a test.

Repeat words in different ways

Use the same small group of words for card matching, room searches, toy hunts, and mealtime conversations. Seeing a word across several playful contexts can make the activity feel familiar without becoming repetitive.

End while it is still fun

A few engaged minutes are enough for one session. Stop when attention shifts, keep the cards nearby, and return later instead of trying to finish the entire set in one sitting.
